50 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Starting A Business

A Successful Entrepreneur Reveals How To Reap The Unlimited Rewards Of Being One’s Own Boss

Successful business ventures don’t happen by accident—but that’s how many entrepreneurs get started. Such “accidental entrepreneurs” may never have expected to own a business, but they can build a thriving venture if they understand what it takes to plan and nurture a bright idea into a lasting and profitable enterprise.

In THE ACCIDENTAL ENTREPRENEUR: 50 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Starting a Business (AMACOM 2008), Susan Urquhart-Brown tells readers what it is really like to own a business and helps them decide whether they possess the motivation and personal traits to enjoy the risks and rewards of flying solo. The short, readable chapters are divided into easy-to-digest sections that address the fundamentals of getting started, from determining whether a business idea is viable and calculating start-up costs, to choosing the right business structure. It debunks the common myths about starting a business, and also how to avoid the 7 biggest pitfalls in business.

With insight and empathy, the author reveals the top 10 traits of successful entrepreneurs, smart tips for investing and finance, and the best ways to build a business through referrals and marketing. Urquhart-Brown offers advice on writing a business plan, choosing a name, and obtaining a business license. It explains what makes a good business partnership, why market research is critical and how to use the growing “green” movement to gain and keep customers.

Key sections of THE ACCIDENTAL ENTREPRENEUR address the psychology of self-employment and what business owners can do to avoid burnout and the temptation to procrastinate. Checklists, worksheets and quizzes make the book a quick and handy reference for those just starting out or looking to expand their young company.

Starting one’s own business should be exciting, not scary. This is the one book that will show readers how to create a successful and fulfilling venture they can be proud of.

“The Accidental Entrepreneur is jam-packed with practical tools, powerful insights and clear-cut strategies that will take you and your business to the next level. Susan Urquhart-Brown uses her passion and incredible marketing savvy to show you how to become an entrepreneur on purpose. This book is a must read!”
